A diatonic instrument is designed to play in only one musical key. You need a different one for every different musical key that you want to play in. An instrument that can play in any key is a chromatic instrument. The diatonic harmonica was first mass produced by Matthias Hohner in 1857. By 1858 he began shipping them to America. They were designed to play German and European folk music. They adapted well to American folk and Country music. The harmonica that I learned to play on was the Hohner Marine Band. It was the basic diatonic ten hole harmonica which has been sold in that form from 1920. The basic diatonic ten hole harmonica is designed to play simple major key songs. The harmony of these...

As the name implies, a harp case is designed to contain a harp for storage or during transport. It keeps the musical instrument from getting damaged, scratched or from attracting dirt and dust that can affect its sound quality. Some harp cases are made to contain a single harp while there are those that come with a number of internal pockets or segments where you can store a number of harps, handles and other accessories. There are two basic types of harp cases: the soft and hard varieties. - Soft cases - a soft harp case is usually made of nylon, PVC or soft leather. It is lightweight and is foldable so you can easily set it aside while you're using the instrument. Because it is lightweight, it...

Seven Things You May Not Know About Your Own Cat

Longevity - It is said, give a cat three years for every human year and you have an idea of how old he is compared to us. Not so. A cat at one year old is capable of reproduction and fully able to take care of himself. A three year old human is helpless. Such mathematical formulas for understanding the 'real' age of an animal don't work because their internal, and external developments vary and do not correspond to human development. But did you know that the life span of cats seems to be increasing, from around twelve years or so several decades ago to eighteen or more and it seems now not uncommon for cats to live into their twenties? Not only advances in cat medicine but apparently in genetic...

Party Economics, 101

Most big decisions at most big parties ultimately come down to money. From how many guests to invite, to where to have your event, and from the decor to the menu itself - few of us are so flush that we can totally escape the cost factor. Sooner or later, we must make hard choices that can take a lot of the fun out of the party - at least for a while. This is especially true when it comes to your entertainment. Last night, I set up my portable piano in the 5th floor lobby of a high-rise office building. The occasion was a gathering of the board of directors of our local annual film festival. To be honest, I was their second choice - and a distant second at that. What they had really wanted was very...

Leading people to higher levels of productivity is not for the weak at heart. To get strong for leadership, you'll need to take a hard look at some of your work habits. And you'll probably need to improve some of your people skills. Change a habit? You know how hard this is, but sometimes your effectiveness, your happiness - and even your life - may depend on doing so. Improve a skill? There's nothing easy about that either, especially if you already have a habitual way of doing something. But your success as a leader may depend on changing your behavior. So what's involved? How does this kind of learning happen? The first thing you need to know is that all behavior is triggered by thought processes...

Like a good movie soundtrack, your wedding music can help set the tone and contribute to the ambiance of the ceremony and reception. Although picking the correct music is a large task, understanding that this choice is one of the most important in planning will help keep you motivated to jump into this project. If you choose to be married in a place of worship, regulations and tradition may require you to use particular songs at particular moments in the ceremony. Therefore, speaking with people involved in the wedding, music can often be changed to meet your needs and wants. Often your selection of non-religious decision does not present a problem in adding it to the standard ceremony songs. A...

Especially in this day and age of monumental stress and consequent health difficulties that many people experience as a result, a spa can be a mental and emotional vacation as you sit in the soothing hot waters and let your worries and cares be soaked away for a while as your inner batteries recharge. Soaking in a spa has also been shown to have rejuvenating effects on the skin. You'll want to tailor your spa to your own personal sense of aesthetics, landscaping, sunlight, prevailing winds, and of course to any privacy considerations that you may have. But in the end, it's not difficult to have a spa...

Amy Moar may be a little to the smaller side of statuesque, but she has a heart that must be warmer and bigger than most of the adults around her. She's a beautiful, if undersized 12 year old, her tiny hands more akin to those of four year old and her height in a similar age pattern. When she sings to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Edinburgh's Usher Hall on 3 June, his intuitive love and respect for all sentient life will be blessed with a very special kind of awareness as he, in turn, blesses her. Amy's big moment comes about because the co-ordinator of His Holiness's visit recently met her music teacher, Janet Anderson. When he heard the story of Amy and of the song, he says "it was as clear as...

God gave us a choice between spiritual life and death "so He could have people on His side," says Damian, 9. Sounds like we're picking teams for a giant volleyball or baseball game. Do you think God cares which team we choose? "It doesn't matter to Him," says Garrett, 8. Kristin, 9, agrees. She says God gave us a choice "so we can do what we want with our life." And Wes, 11, believes it's a good thing that there are two teams because "heaven is too heavenly for sinners." Lots of people know just how Wes feels. Heaven - with all that imagined singing and harp playing - turns them off. They say they don't want to go to heaven because their friends won't be there. But what if separation from God is...

One of the most common errors that a harmonica player can make when playing with others is playing too much during a song and as a professional harmonica teacher I always try to keep my students thinking objectively about ways that they can improve. The following exercise will allow you to gauge the amount that you play and as long as you remain objective should give you something new to work on. This exercise will yield the best results if you have some way of recording yourself playing along with your favourite songs. Step 1) Choose a song that has vocals, but no harmonica. Ideally there should be a place for you to put a solo. Step 2) Record yourself playing harmonica to the song. Step 3) Analyze...

Are you startled by unexpected loud noises? If you are, just think how it must be for your cat. Cats do not necessarily understand what varied and strange loud sounds mean. They have to determine if they are threatening. If so, they have to determine what they should do-where they should go to be protected and safe. On top of that, cats have sensitive hearing-not yet having been diminished by a Metallica concert or watching a Steelers game in person. While your cat companion can become used to loud sounds on his or her own, frequently the intensity of the startle and lack of compensatory positive attention can develop into a fear. Think of your cat as a child becoming scared when it encounters...

Yet... how far apart are they in beauty and value compared to each other. The pearl and the seashell have also identical structural synthesis; yet the pearl is superior in beauty and as cosmetic value. Similar situations we observe also in human beings. Irish culture is alive and well on the "Emerald Isle" of the Caribbean. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated as a national holiday in only two places in the world - the country of Ireland, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The national flag of Montserrat depicts the legendary female Irish figure Erin playing an ancient Irish harp. And the green shamrock is stamped on every visitors passport upon entry to the island, and the shamrock is also carved on the door of the Governor's house. The national dish of the island, Goat Water, also has an Irish origin. It is a stew made of kidney or mutton, and is spiced with cloves and rum. As you travel around Montserrat, you'll find familiar sounding Irish...

A double neck guitar looks like a set of Siamese twins. With two separate and distinct necks and a single, wider-than-average body, the instrument really does appear to be two independent entities joined by a common body. This description is, in fact, not too far from the truth. The benefit of the double neck guitar is that it essentially allows the musician access to more than one instrument at a time. To take the most common example, consider the typical double neck guitar. This instrument has one neck with twelve strings and one with six. The musician can, at any point during his or her performance, choose to switch between the two necks. This freedom of choice allows him or her to double the...
